Welcome to the Grade 5 Reading site. I've included information about the main components of our class along with links to some of the reference pages you will use throughout the year. Please refer to this home page for information about assignment due dates, vocabulary quizzes and book club meeting dates.
April 13-17, 2015
The students read the first section of their new book club selection during the break so we will have the first round of book club meetings this week. Students will have time during the first class session to start their book club response journal writing assignment and may take the journal home if they would like more time. The book club meetings will take place at the end of the week. Group 1 will have their meeting on Wednesday, April 15th. Groups 2 and 7 will have their meetings on Thursday, April 16th. Groups 3, 6 and 8 have their meetings this Friday, April, 17th.
Students now have an additional task of completing one job of their choice for each book club meeting. These include: Word Wizard, Illustrator, Literary Luminary, Investigator, Connector, Travel Guide or Discussion Director. Please see the Book Club Roles and Responsibilities document for more information on each of these jobs.
Students will receive vocabulary list number twelve this week. Vocabulary quiz twelve is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22nd for reading groups 2, 6 and 8. Groups 1 and 7 will have their quiz on Thursday, April 23rd. Group three has their quiz scheduled on Friday, April 24th. A link to the current list and the root words practice sheet are posted on the vocabulary page of this website.
Our latest book share is in the form of a poster. Each student had class time before the break to draft a paragraph or two that explains their thoughts about a book they would recommend to their peers. I have asked that they include a picture on the other half of the page. Students will have this week to complete the poster. Please see the Book Recommendation Poster Criteria for more information about this assignment.
